How do you begin an introduction to a speaker that\u2019s truly different than everything we\u2019ve presented so far? A massive beast of a cabinet with proportions that make a rhino\u2019s backside look modest. A design that makes no attempt to blend into sleek, minimalist living rooms and is clearly not a result of a design studio with complex aesthetic ideals. A speaker so true to the original essence of what a speaker should be that you find yourself falling for its looks after just one track. Developed with a single, simple goal: engagement. A speaker with extraordinary musical gifts that, in many ways, are exactly the opposite from your visual expectations and – if you dare to admit it and have the space for it – might well be unbeatable in its class. Well, then you simply call it by name: the JBL 4369 Studio Monitor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

The JBL Monitor series is nothing new. Nor, frankly, is a model with these proportions. We thoroughly enjoyed its predecessor, the 4367, and the more compact 4349 models currently reside behind the acoustically transparent projection screen in our cinema room. Yet, you couldn’t exactly call the JBL Monitor series mainstream – unlike JBL\u2019s Classic range, spearheaded by the L100 (the modern-day reincarnation of the 1970s hit). It is actually quite odd, considering these Classic models are essentially the “domesticated” versions of the original Monitor family – a lineage that, running more or less parallel to the Classic series, boasts a rich history of “big, bold, and beautiful” designs. Take the 4350, for instance, with its imposing 121cm-wide blue baffle. These models are now, well over 50 years after their debut, slowly but surely gaining popularity on Instagram; you\u2019ll frequently see them dominating a wall in ultra-trendy hi-fi bars on social media, especially in Japan. After all, Asia never abandoned the JBL monitor. Europe, on the other hand, was a different story: back in the late 80s, Dad, with Mom massaging his earlobe, let himself be seduced by the “Better sound through research” slogan. Proper speakers gave way to “peep-and-grunt” systems featuring pea-sized drivers on the wall and a subwoofer rumbling away under the fish tank. It was a marketing-driven hi-fi revolution. Admirable in its own right, but one that actually steered us away from the true music experience. After all, the double-bass player at the Concerthall doesn’t lug that massive instrument around for fun; you can’t cheat the laws of physics.<\/p>\n

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: the JBL 4369 is a \u2018real\u2019 speaker. Not because it is large and delivers an awe-inspiringly powerful performance, but because it has the power to move you deeply through subtlety and lightness of touch. Because it creates a soundstage that makes you just as likely to bow in reverence as to get up and dance. And because it embraces a grand scale. An approach that, in some respects, is simply the right way to do things. JBL is no stranger to raw power, yet the definition and transparency that a well-positioned 4369 Monitor projects into the room are simply addictive. A speaker for true audio enthusiasts who dare to look beyond the established order.<\/p>\n<\/div>

TECHNOLOGY<\/p>\n

It is clear enough. We have a pretty distinct opinion about it: not really sexy, but truly magnificent. And that is hardly surprising. The development of the JBL 4369 ran more or less parallel to that of JBL\u2019s most prestigious Summit series; it shares many core values with that line, albeit in a (technically) downscaled form. However, the 4369 is a thoroughbred 2-way design, whereas the Summit models, with the exception of the Ama, are 3-way designs featuring a dedicated midrange driver.<\/p>\n<\/div>

2219Nd Differential Drive\u00ae Woofer<\/p>\n

At the heart of the JBL 4369 lies a 15-inch (380mm!!) 2219Nd Differential Drive woofer. This is a newly developed JBL driver featuring a dual voice coil, engineered to minimize distortion caused by rising inductance while simultaneously maximizing control over cone movement. A unique feature of the 2219Nd is its motor structure: the two voice coils are mounted in tandem on a single former, with each coil operating within its own optimized magnetic field. This optimizes and maintains a constant, effective grip on the voice coil\u2019s movement, and thus the woofer cone, even as diaphragm excursion increases. Crucially, this is achieved without using excessive amounts of copper in the voice coil; more copper would mean greater mass and increased inductance – the woofer’s greatest enemy, as it acts like a handbrake on transient response.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The woofer\u2019s diameter, unusually large for home audio, offers a massive advantage when combined with its stiff suspension and superior drive system: it barely has to work to get the job done. Low-frequency impact is directly linked to the movement of air particles; in this regard, a single 15-inch driver is comparable to roughly seven 6-inch woofers, the “average” size frequently found in slim-profile speaker models. Without turning this into a “who has the biggest” contest, it goes without saying that the JBL 4369 holds a huge advantage here. This translates into extremely low distortion and effortless performance, regardless of the listening volume.<\/p>\n<\/div>

D2830B Compression Driver<\/p>\n

Investing in minimized distortion and maximized dynamics is pointless unless that approach extends to the rest of the frequency spectrum. Peaking above the 15-inch woofer is an equally impressive tweeter: the D2830B compression driver. Like the woofer, this is not merely an off-the-shelf component but a genuine JBL development. For anyone curious about the philosophy behind the compression driver and horn combination, we have included some technical background information at the end of this introduction to the 4369.<\/p>\n

The 2830B is a compression driver that essentially consists of two tweeters combined into one unit; hidden from view behind the phase plug are two 3-inch (75mm) diaphragms. Each is coupled to its own voice coil operating within its own magnetic field. This mirrored configuration is the mechanical equivalent of a balanced design, where mutual differences cancel each other out and distortion is minimized. <\/p>\n<\/div>

The 2830B features a high-frequency horn in the form of JBL\u2019s proprietary High Definition Imaging (HDI) waveguide. Though often, somewhat irreverently, referred to simply as a “horn”, this massive waveguide works in tandem with the compression driver to optimize the tweeter\u2019s efficiency and dispersion. Because the driver has a relatively large 75mm diameter, it remains authoritative well down into the lower midrange. The result is quite the opposite of what one might expect: the upper-midrange is completely free of harshness or strain, delivering a sound that is incredibly refined and detailed, yet rich in body and texture. When a 5A drumstick strikes a cymbal, you hear the bite of the initial impact followed by the decay of the material’s resonating mass. JBL\u2019s top-of-the-line speaker series reproduces this kind of sonic richness and tonal nuance like no other. While the K2 and Everest models take top honors in this regard (more on that later), the 4369 performs absolutely magnificently as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>

We can confidently say that, in its price range, the 4369 is unbeatable in many musical respects. There is an old saying about a monkey with a gold ring, but we believe that once you get to know it, you will naturally come to love it. What a speaker!<\/p>\n

By far the majority of speakers rely on a dome tweeter to reproduce high frequencies. These often feature a diameter of around 25mm, allowing them to disperse high frequencies with sufficient width. However, that advantage works against the tweeter at lower frequencies, where it must take over from the midrange driver or woofer, because the wavelengths it needs to reproduce are large relative to its diaphragm, causing a loss of efficiency. Think of it like cycling up a hill in a high gear: it\u2019s a struggle! This is precisely why we cup our hands around our mouths when shouting from the sidelines; the shout becomes much louder because the sound is coupled more efficiently to the surrounding air. Yet, such shouting is not without consequences. You end up with a sore throat, or a can of beer hitting you in the back of the neck.<\/em><\/p>\n

JBL\u2019s compression driver and horn technology is based on the principle of coupling the sound pressure generated by a small diaphragm to the surrounding air much more efficiently. It starts at the tweeter, where energy from the dome is compressed via a special phase plug, thereby increasing the pressure. JBL achieves this by enclosing the front of the diaphragm and channeling the sound pressure outward through a tiny opening, this is the first part of the formula. Next, the compression driver is coupled to a specially shaped horn, where the small, high-pressure (low-velocity) opening transitions gradually into a large horn mouth. As a result, pressure drops (and velocity increases), allowing the small driver to overcome the air’s acoustic radiation impedance far more effectively, boosting efficiency by a full 10 dB. Given the same input signal, the compression driver\/horn tweeter plays ten times louder.<\/em><\/p>\n

Additionally, JBL\u2019s specially shaped High Definition Imaging Waveguide, or horn, contributes to highly controlled dispersion characteristics. Energy is projected into the room with greater precision, aligning much better with the dispersion pattern of the woofer or midrange driver. This creates a much more coherent overall speaker system.<\/em><\/p>\n

The best part of this approach is that JBL does not use this massive gain in efficiency or sound pressure to play louder. After all, the tweeter\u2019s output must still be matched to that of the woofer, which may be as much as 12 dB less efficient. This output adjustment takes place in the crossover network, where the electrical signal to the tweeter is attenuated. And therein lies the ultimate goal: a lower input signal means less distortion, more headroom, and a tremendous potential advantage in sound quality.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>
