Last March, we introduced the Matrix Audio SI-1 Network Isolator. A sleek, ingenious device featuring one RJ-45 1Gb input and one output, internally fully isolated from one another via unique dual-channel optical isolation. Meticulously constructed with an internal linear power supply, dual femtosecond clock circuits, and an all-aluminum chassis, the SI-1 goes to great lengths to optimally isolate the connected music streamer from noise and interference. The SI-1 is a prime example of Matrix Audio’s commitment to perfecting digital music reproduction. Designed to isolate network streamers with RJ-45 internet connections, the SI-1 provides the ultimate galvanic separation between the music streamer and the rest of the network. But what if you connect your digital music transport, computer, or Roon Core to the DAC via USB? In that case, a potential path for interference remains – which is a shame. Building on the success and expertise gained with the SI-1, Matrix Audio developed a second isolator focused specifically on USB audio optimization: the SU-1 USB Isolation Switcher.

ISOLATION?
As soon as you electrically connect multiple components – each with its own power supply – you create a risk of potential differences, interference, and signal disturbances. This risk increases when some of the connected devices feature less-than-ideal power supply shielding, such as those found in computers or standard power adapters. High-frequency byproducts and noise from sources like switching power supplies create a form of interference that is best kept out of the audio signal path. When a USB audio device is part of this chain, the electrical USB connection acts as a conduit that not only transfers digital audio to the DAC but also noise. Obviously something that we would prefer to prevent reaching our audio system. This is precisely what the Matrix Audio SU-1 addresses. Featuring three selectable USB audio inputs (2x USB-B, 1x USB-C) and two independently isolated outputs (USB-A), the SU-1 Isolation Switcher prevents interference caused by ground loops and high-frequency noise, while its internal linear power supply completely regenerates the 5V USB power. In doing so, the SU-1 acts as an effective barrier against noise, allowing the connected DAC to perform exactly as intended.

Beyond preventing interference via the USB audio connection, the SU-1 offers several other unique features:
• Switchable input and output selection, allowing multiple USB sources to be freely routed to either of the two outputs. This enables you, for example, to optimize both your desktop headphone DAC and your high-end hi-fi DAC using a single SU-1.
• Optimized input and output impedance for the USB connection, ensuring improved signal transmission and stability.
• Protects downstream USB devices against damage from issues such as voltage fluctuations, electrostatic discharge, or lightning strikes.
• To further optimize USB audio transmission, Matrix Audio has also developed two USB cables: a USB A-B cable (available in 30 cm or 120 cm lengths) and a USB C-to-B cable (120 cm).

REALY?
Yes! Like the SI-1, the SU-1 is an exceptional addition to a fine hi-fi system. When used correctly, the sonic improvement is far from subtle. The sound loses harshness and artificial edginess; it feels more relaxed and open while simultaneously gaining clarity. Music sounds less smeared. However, it is not a magic bullet or the audiophile equivalent of a “fat burner” or muscle-building supplement that supposedly works while you lie on the couch with a bag of chips. No, think of it instead as a healthy protein shake complementing a nutritious diet and an active lifestyle. In a well-balanced system featuring high-quality components, the SU-1 – much like the SI-1 – can truly add an extra dimension to the listening experience. This makes both the SI-1 and SU-1 the ideal audio accessory for the discerning hifi-enthusiast and music lover.
Both the Matrix Audio SU-1 and SI-1 are available from stock.
